Who I am
I was the Chief Adviser on School Standards at the DfE between 2006 -2013. I managed accountability, assessment, inspection, school improvement, pedagogy, catch-up programmes, international work and deprivation as well as the core subjects. Before that, I spent several years as a National Director in the government’s National Strategies. I was the English inspector in Surrey LA. I taught in every key stage, but I started working life as an English teacher. I have been an adviser, an inspector and a writer with over 80 titles. I retired last year and I spend about half my time training or writing.
What I do
I do training, consultancy and writing. For obvious reasons, my activities at the moment are focused on the new curriculum; grammar, punctuation, spelling and vocabulary in English; differentiation, especially for the more able; working with disadvantaged children; and considering what lies ahead with regard to assessment and accountability.
